Introduction:
FAS is the National Training and Employment Authority. Because of the extensive nature of our work, we have organised our services under the following headings:
Training Centre Waterford
This centre offers a wide range of training courses in both apprentice sectors and specific skills. Notice of these courses are posted in the local FAS office Irishtown.
Community Employment
A temporary part time work scheme that offers unemployed people a chance to work and progress from the scheme into full time employment. Activities are usually in the social economy sector, such as: tidy towns, care, heritage, arts, care taking support to schools. Specific skills and own time training is promoted.
Community Response
Genealogical type projects, personal development for disadvantaged groups.
Community Training Workshop
Workshops targeted at early school leavers.
Social Economy
New program looking at projects of a commercial nature. Operates in areas not in conflict with the commercial sector. Projects must have the ability to generate some income, but operate within the social economy, e.g. providing a local bus service, contract cleaning for local authorities, childcare provision.
Services to Business
Promotes training for those in employment. Provides grant aid for training and development. Administers the apprenticeship scheme.
Placement Services
Provides a link between unemployed and employers. This service also provides job guidance and aptitude testing for employers.
