As Gaeilge

Winding through the city is the river Nore, which has played a significant role in the early development of the city, the original settlement was built around a ford of this river. Kilkenny, as an inland location, experiences a continental type climate and is known for its extremes of temperature.

A distinctive characteristic of Kilkenny is its limestone base, and this combined with the other stones quarried in and around the city has contributed to many of the unique buildings in the city. "The Marble City" is one of Kilkenny's many names, arising from the vein of black marble found here.
