Kilkenny's educational institutions have produced many fine scholars over the years, amongst the most famous being Jonathan Swift and John Banim. There are 23 educational institutions in the city, including 10 primary schools, 7 post primary and 3 special schools.
Following Kilkenny's selection as an information age town, the education sector has been to the fore in the development and application of ICT. Kilkenny was one of three regions in the country who actively participated in the schools IT 2000 Initiative. Nineteen schools participated in the initiative and The primary and special schools in Kilkenny City have developed their own schools archival website. Topics include: human interest stories from past pupils, great sporting/academic achievements, founding history of the schools, famous past pupils, history of the local area.

This project provides schools with an opportunity to use ICT in a way that compliments the curriculum and it also allows schools to preserve their culture and past history through the medium of the web. Each primary and special school has been given a PC, Printer, scanner and Digital camera, a web site template and ICT skills training as part of this project.
All post primary schools have dedicated computer rooms and are continuing to integrate ICT into the curriculum since participating in the school integration projects.

TLK Webdesign is a website design company established by three students from CBS Secondary School, Tadg O'Dwyer, Liam Lenihan and Kevin Mooney. Their website Kilkenny City won the ESAT Golden Spiders Award for the best website in the Young Person's category. The awards are in recognition of companies and individuals for their innovative use of the internet. More
Kilkenny Information Age contracted the Centre for Research in IT in education(CRITE) to undertaken an evaluation of the projects.
In 2001 we established a technical support initiative in the employment of an IT Engineer and the development of a knowledge base website, to address the issue of technical support in the schools
The National University of Ireland Maynooth operates an outreach campus in Kilkenny city, and two leading institutes of technology - Waterford IT and Carlow IT are located within 30 miles of the city.
Waterford IT produces 1990 graduates annually, half of those hold degrees while the remainder hold diplomas and certificates. The total number of students breaks down evenly between the four faculties - Engineering, Science, Business Studies and Humanities. ICT courses include a B.Sc. Commercial Software Development, B.Sc. Commercial Computing and B.Sc. Industrial Computing.
Carlow IT produces 900 graduates annually. The total number of students breaks down fairy evenly between the six faculties - Business Studies, Humanities, Mech/Civil Engineering, Elec. Engineering, Science and Computing/Physics/Maths. ICT courses include BSc. in Software Engineering.
