Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired men and women who join together in autonomous clubs throughout the world. The word Probus is an abbreviation of the words professional and business but membership is not restricted to these two groups. Anyone who has had any measure of responsibility in any field of endeavour may apply to join.
The basic purpose of a Probus Club is to provide regular gatherings of persons who in retirement appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and of a similar level of interest. The organisation and the constituent clubs are non-sectarian and non-political. Probus membership provides self-generating goodwill, a sense of belonging and a diverse background of interests. The fellowship and cordiality evident within Probus Clubs ensures a highly successful future for Probus as a firmly established part of the community.
Throughout Ireland, North and South, there are one hundred and fourteen Probus Clubs. Many have only male members, several have ladies-only membership and a few are open to men and women. The choice is made by the membership of each club.
Except during July and August and on National Holidays the Kilkenny and District Probus Club meet on alternate Tuesday mornings. Most meetings are held in the Clubhouse Hotel, Patrick's Street and consist of 15 to 20 minutes for coffee and general conversation, 15 minutes for Probus business and one hour for a talk by a member or visiting speaker or a discussion on local or wider affairs.
