The Hole in the Wall
Originally a Tudor building, The Hole in the Wall behind High Street was, between about 1750 and 1850, one of Ireland's more renowned supper-houses, with many distinguished visitors imbibing the locally brewed ale and carousing into the night.
Some notable patrons were the Duke of Wellington, Sir Jonah Barrington and Henry Grattan who would have heard it described in popular verse of the time.
If you ever go to Kilkenny, remember the Hole in the Wall, You may there get blind drunk for a penny or tipsy for nothing at all.' Unfortunately the Hole in the Wall is not accessible to the public at present.
