The Duke of Ormonde (1640-1710) After the restoration of King Charles in 1660, I was able to restore much of the property that had been confiscated by Cromwell. I rebuilt the Castle and established a school which King James II, during his short reign, elevated to the University of St.Canice at Kilkenny College. Unfortunately it lasted only six months as William of Orange defeated King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, and confiscations of property began again.
