Saint Canice (514-598AD) When I came to this place, I found it to be godless and barbaric in the main. In the sixth century, I established a monastery here for the cultivation of Christianity and learning. The good people of this ancient river-side settlement did call the place Cill Ceannaigh - the church of Saint Canice - after me, and set to learning texts and living lives of purity.
